I Want to Buy a Campervan!

11 April 2009 14 Comments

So, I want something which is a little bit of a project – something which I can use as a toy at the weekends.

I am currently liking the idea of a VW Camper Van – a Classic one….

Thing is – some come expensive some come cheap – I know the expensive ones are re-con’s and also you can buy a brand new one from Brazil – built by VW Brazil.

Anyone got any experience of these? What to look for – the usual thing like making sure the chassis is sound clearly is important and the 1600CC unleaded mod….

learned to drive in one… 1978 Type 2 1600… gutless, changing gear was like stirring porridge, but it was worth it for the trips to the south coast (when i passed). look out for rust everywhere, especially in the top of the front wheel arces (beneath the front seats) and the brake pipes need investigation… the engine ‘tray’ can perish too (the engine slides out)… the split-screen version is cooler but older and rarer and so more expensive..

I am always hankering after one when down Cornwall. You see loads parked up at Watergate Bay. You see so may different types. Personally I’d want one that’s as original as possible, but I’m guessing these would be the most sought after (and expensive).

Make sure you get good AA coverage!!!

Guy who runs one of my local scrappys has a thing for Vee Dubs. He’s not long pulled in a ‘56 oval window Beetle and as i drove past the other day he has a split screen ‘bus parked outside.

He offered me a ‘69 Mk1 Capri that had been stored (damn solid really) for ?300 a couple of months back which i ummed and ahhed about as i was skint at the time. Decided to go and get it and he’d sold it elsewhere…

they’re nice, but they are *very* expensive to run, and *very* slow and basic. i’d have one in a shot as a 2nd car, but they’re not practicle transport at all. and it has to be a splitty.

    Jam,

Depends what you want to do!

It depends on money and how much hard work you want…
