I have a 2000 Volkswagen Beetle TDI (turbo diesel) in need of a new timing belt and tensioner. Parts and labor, how much should this maintenance cost me (at a repair shop — not a VW dealership)?

If you get out for under $500 you should consider yourself lucky.

i work for a VW dealer in California, beetles are cramped at the same time you do the timing belt you should also do the water pump because you dont have to repay for labor even at dealer rates with coolant, the belt and water pump this rarely works out at over 550 the tensioner is the single most expensive part not doing the timing belt at every 60k miles for a manual transmission and 40k miles for a automatic can lead to very expensive repairs, if the belt brakes or tensioner fails. i would recommend taking it to the dealer simply because they do this work every day and are familiar with the cam timing and injection pump timing
